Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp inside a tooth is infected by decay or damaged by an injury. Left alone the infection can spread and cause an abscess, and the tooth may have to come out.

Under local anaesthetic we remove the infection, clean and fill the root, and place a temporary filling while the tooth settles. Once the infection has cleared the tooth is filled permanently or crowned. Most treatments take two or more visits.

Step by step

How it works

  1. 1

    Numb

A local anaesthetic, so the treatment should feel no different to a filling.

  2. 2

    Clean

The infection is removed and the root canals are cleaned and shaped.

  3. 3

    Seal

The roots are filled and a temporary filling protects the tooth while it settles.

  4. 4

    Restore

Once the infection has cleared, the tooth gets a permanent filling or a crown.

Specialist endodontics with Dr Rajeevan Mahendran: consultation £80, specialist root canal treatment £995. New patients and referrals from your own dentist are welcome.

The alternative is removing the tooth. Once the pulp is destroyed it cannot heal, and an infected tooth should not be left in the mouth. Keeping your natural teeth is usually best.

It is done under local anaesthetic and should feel much like having a filling. Most people are relieved that the pain they came in with goes away.
